It's Poetry in Motion...

As we started discussing poetry in class, we looked at how technology can aid in creating and sharing poetry. When I saw the connection between poetry and technology, the first thing I thought of was "She Blinded Me With Science" by Dolby Thomas, which I thought to be odd until I came home and actually watched the video. I think this song and video are very supportive of the ideas we were discussing in class that day. The song in itself shows the advancement of technology and science but the lyrics are very poetic in discussing the matter. In class we learned some poetic terms, a few of which can be applied to this song. Even the title of the song itself is a metaphor. There is a lot of repetition, such as the word science and a few key phrases as well. There is also rhyme throughout the poem with the singer rhyming words such as ocean, motion and commotion. The singer also uses imagery throughout the song, claiming that the eyes of the woman are "deep as any ocean." The singer uses a lot of methods to compliment and describe the woman, however, he later goes on to say he "can hear machinery" and that he can "smell the chemicals" which are not very romantic ideas. This really reminded me of some of the poems we read on Wednesday such as Wordsworth, who very poetically described the lack of beauty in the city life. Unlike Wordsworth, who during the industrial revolution, rejected advancements, Dolby Thomas embraces them. He incorporates science and technology into his video in order to relay his poetic message. This is exactly what we are learning to do in class. We are using this blog in order to present our ideas about poetry and literature to others. This video and song are a great example of how two things which are considered different can come together and work out great.
